Students selected to attend London International Youth Science ...

Hermaleigh Townsley aged 17, attending Palmerston North Girls? High School is one of two students selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the London International Youth Science Forum in July/August.

Hermaleigh says ?Science has always been something I have wanted to be involved in. I love every minute of it?.

Dr Heather Meikle, Co-ordinator of the Gifted & Talented Programme at PNGHS says ?Hermaleigh is an intelligent and hardworking student and she excels in all her subjects.? She is undertaking research for a Gold CREST project this year and was recently selected as one of 19 students to attend the NZ International Biology Olympiad training camp?.

Hermaleigh will join Jennifer Randle from Onslow College, Wellington who is the other student selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the London International Youth Science Forum.

The New Zealand students will join 300 like-minded students from 60 other countries at the event. This year LIYSF 2011 will explore the future developments in the sciences, with lecture demonstrations, specialist seminars and debates led by a team of scientists and experts and scientific visits which will include Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Hermaleigh will be supported by the Talented School Students Travel Award administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand for her international travel and registration costs.

The students going from New Zealand to the London International Youth Science Forum are among 33 students from around New Zealand in Year 12 and 13 who have been selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend international science and technology events around the world.

Debbie Woodhall from the Royal Society of New Zealand says more than 300 applications were received this year from keen science students. ?The standard of applications this year has been absolutely outstanding? she says.

Other events which students will be attending are the Biofutures forum in Brisbane, the Professor Harry Messels Science School, Sydney, the USA International Space Camp, the Youth ANZAAS conference in Brisbane and the 4th APEC Youth Science Forum in Thailand.
