Windows Server 2012 Essentials Tip: Enable and Configure Media Sharing
While Windows Server 2012 Essentials is most obviously an update for Windows Server Essentials 2011, it also includes some features that make it an excellent next server for Windows Home Server fans. One of these is media sharing, which needs to be enabled first and then configured for optimal use.
You?re prompted to set up Essentials 2012?s media server as part of the initial setup tasks in the Dashboard. That said, if you skip over this step, you can enable the media server at any time by visiting Settings, Media from the Dashboard. Just click the On button to enable it.
There are three related settings here to consider.
Video streaming quality. This setting will determine the quality of video streaming from the server over both the local network and, via Remote Web Access Media Player, over the Internet. You can set this to one of four settings?low, medium, high, and best?but note that your server?s ability to effectively stream video at these settings is in fact determined by the performance of the server?s processor. This is unfortunately hard to gauge because?wait for it?Windows Server 2012 doesn?t actually provide a WEI (Windows Experience Index) score anymore. This Microsoft support page has some generally useless information about this issue.
Media library name. By default, your Essentials 2012-based media library will be seen as ?Digital Media Library? in connecting clients such as Windows Media Player or the Xbox 360. You can customize this name to something you prefer.
Customize media library. If you click the Customize button, you?ll be presented with a window letting you determine which shared folders can present media to clients that connect to the server. If you select No for any of these folders, those locations will not be available when a media client (again, applications like Windows Media Player or the Xbox 360) connects to the server. (Folders that are disabled in this way still appear when your browse the server?s folder shares via Network Explorer from Windows 7 or 8, however. This is for media sharing purposes only.)
Enabling media sharing accomplishes two things.
First, it makes four new folder shares?Music, Pictures, Recorded TV, and Videos?available to clients that connect over the local network. Previous to adding the media server, Essentials provided shares such as Company, File History Backups, Folder Redirection, and Users. Each of these new shares will be available for normal Network Explorer browsing from Windows 7 and 8 clients even if you elect not to share media from some of these folders, as described above.
Second, it makes media available for sharing using standard DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technologies. You can ?see? these DLNA-compatible media servers in Network Explorer, under the Media Devices group:
To use them, you need a compatible client. For example, in Windows Media Player, these servers and their shared media will appear in the ?Other Libraries? area.
Likewise, you can browse the contents of these media shares from your Xbox 360 and then use the built-in music and video players to play the content you find. To do so, tap the Xbox Guide button on the Xbox 360 controller or remote. Then, from the Xbox Guide interface, navigate right to Media. Here, select either Music Player or Video Player, and then choose the media library from which to connect. On my network, I see two Essentials 2012-based servers, which are listed as MICRO: Home Server and ESS: Digital Media Server in Xbox 360. In each case, the capitalized first name is the machine name and the second name is the name of the media library.
Note: The Essentials 2012 media sharing feature will work with any DLNA-compatible device, not just Microsoft clients.
Media sharing works outside the normal Windows access rights controls. So while you may restrict the access of a shared folder to certain users, and then in more granular ways on a user-by-user basis, media sharing is either on or off. And if it is on, it is globally available for browsing and playback by any compatible client on the network. And that includes devices and PCs that are not part of the domain.

Western Digital My Passport Edge
The Western Digital My Passport Edge ($99.99 list) fulfills a niche: ready-to-go pocket hard drives. As such, it comes in one flavor: a 500GB drive with a USB 3.0 interface. The line is built on a simpler premise: This hard drive is meant to be a convenience item to be purchased with very little effort. And that concept pretty much works. Instead of having to agonize over color choices and capacities, it's the hard drive to recommend to your friends or relatives when they "just need a hard drive."
Design and Features
The My Passport Edge is a compact, pocket-sized drive measuring about 0.5 by 3.25 by 4.5 inches (HWD), which makes it a little shorter than an iPhone 4S, a smidge wider, and almost as thin. It's thinner, but otherwise about the same size as other recent My Passport drives like the Western Digital My Passport Studio (2TB) ($299.99 list, 4 stars) and Western Digital My Passport (2TB) ($249.99 list, 3.5 stars). The drive is made mostly of matte black polycarbonate plastic, with a thin metal lid with the drive's name and a dot-based design printed on it. One edge houses the drive's USB 3.0 micro-b connector. The drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable, so it's ready to use right out of the box. There's a three-year warranty, which is better than some competitors like the Editor's Choice Seagate Backup Plus , which makes do with a two-year warranty. Both warranties are better than more basic drives that come with a one-year warranty.
The drive comes formatted for NTFS, to work with Windows systems. You can reformat the drive as HFS+ for use with a Mac, plus the drive comes with a set of Mac and Windows utilities. The drive comes with WD's SmartWare (an easy to use backup utility), WD Security (simple hardware encryption), and WD Drive Utilities (diagnostics and sleep timer). Really, if you're not planning on setting up automatic backup on Windows, you don't have to use any of the included utilities. The drive is also ready to go (after a reformat) as a Time Machine backup disk for Macs. The drive's 500GB capacity is certainly enough to backup most laptops and ultrabooks. The drive can also be used as a quick way to transfer large multi-GB files between computers.
Performance
The My Passport Edge is a speedy drive, par for the course. It took a scant 16 seconds to copy our standard 1.2GB test folder over USB 3.0. We also gained good scores on the PCMark 5 (6,158 points) and PCMark 7 (1,536 points) hard drive tests. This compared well to the current Editor's Choice for portable hard drives, the Seagate Backup Plus (which scored 6,463 on PCMark 05 and 1,498 on PCMark 7). The larger capacity My Passport (2TB) was also in the same ballpark (6,106 on PCMark 05). Essentially, if you have a USB 3.0 equipped laptop or desktop, all three choices will be speedy, much speedier than USB 2.0, which takes over forty seconds to copy the same folder on all three drives.
The Western Digital My Passport Edge is a good hard drive, and will serve you well if you get one. It's fast, and it has a good warranty. However, the Seagate Backup Plus has an interchangeable interface, which is a better choice for techie users who need to use other interface like FireWire or Thunderbolt. The Seagate also has a better dollar per GB ratio: the My Passport costs 20 cents a GB, while the Seagate is about 14 cents per GB. It's even better when you realize that some online merchants are selling the Seagate for the same $99.99 price as the My Passport Edge. Though the My Passport Edge has a better warranty, the Seagate Backup Plus still holds on to its portable hard drive Editors' Choice award due to its better bang for the buck. That said, if you're a tech savvy person who needs to convince her tech brain-dead relative to backup their files, the My Passport Edge is a stress-free recommendation you can give without hesitation.

Slovenia PM: No bailout needed
UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Slovenia's prime minister insisted that the Alpine nation does not need a bailout from the European Union, despite a crippling banking crisis that has unnerved investors and caused political gridlock.
Prime Minister Janez Jansa said Thursday that Slovenia can overcome the threat of bankruptcy on its own by quickly passing banking reform legislation and spending $3 billion to $4 billion euros buying bad debt from state-owned banks.
In an interview with The Associated Press on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations, Jansa said his government is "determined to do everything that's possible" to prevent the need to ask for foreign assistance.
"We don't need money from the European stability mechanism," he said. "Of course we need structural reforms which were neglected during the past."
Once the richest of the six former Yugoslav republics, the Eurozone nation has been hit with a severe recession. Slovenia's real estate bubble burst after the 2008 global financial meltdown, much like Spain, which is under pressure to seek a rescue package.
Slovenia's debt-to-GDP ratio is under 60 percent, Jansa said. By comparison, Spain's debt ratio is to 75.9 percent, according to figures published this month by the Bank of Spain.
Jansa said his government wants to start buying up bad debt from banks by the end of the year. Slovenia also plans to sell bonds later this year.
Parliament "is starting to take all necessary measures to pull Slovenia from dangerous water," he said. "We have to stabilize our banking system. This is the most important short-term measure."
Along with an overheated construction sector, Jansa blamed the crisis on the reluctance of past governments to privatize banks after Slovenia broke away from Yugoslavia.
Jansa also said the severity Europe's financial crisis was underestimated, which only prolonged the political stalemate in Slovenia, when the previous government should have been acting quickly to enact reforms.
Along with continuing to reduce its budget deficit, Jansa said Slovenia must past pension and labor reform to "send appropriate signals to financial markets."
The prime minister said he was confident his center-right government could push pension reform through a bitterly-divided parliament, and that it could survive a referendum if one is called.
Last year, a center-left government failed to pass pension and labor reform. Jansa said his government's proposed pension reform was more palatable because it focused on increasing the number of years Slovenians must pay into the pension system, from 35 years to 40, instead of merely increasing the retirement age to 65, as the failed measure did.
Jansa will need to negotiate with the opposition, which might be less willing to cooperate after Slovenia's main opposition leader, Zoran Jankovic, was among five people briefly detained Thursday in an alleged multimillion-dollar corruption investigation into the building of a sports complex.
Jankovic and his center-left Positive Slovenia coalition won the most votes in a parliamentary election last December. But he failed to form a government and a center-right coalition led by Jansa, his longtime rival, took power.
After declaring Thursday in his address to the United Nations General Assembly that "freedom of speech is fundamental in a democracy," Jansa said there was no campaign to silence his opponents and critics.
"First, I cannot comment on concrete actions of the police and other state authorities. It would be unfair," he said. "Second, freedom of speech has nothing to do with corruption."
Jansa faces his own corruption investigation. A bribery probe is examining a deal to buy military vehicles from Finnish company Patria in 2006, during his first term as prime minister. He dismissed the charges as false.
In his General Assembly address, Jansa proposed strengthening enforcement of the 1951 U.N. Genocide Convention. He told The AP that he was motivated by the U.N.'s inability to stop the genocide in Bosnia, and that the deaths of nearly 30,000 people in Syria were "clear proof" that a legal enforcement mechanism of the Genocide Convention is needed.
Russia and China have blocked three Security Council resolutions that could have led to sanctions on Syria.
"It's not too late to stop the conflict, we can still save tens of thousands of lives," he said. "As Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stated Monday, we have to add some tools. Otherwise, everything is stuck with the situation in the Security Council."

Genetic sleuthing uncovers deadly new virus in Africa

An isolated outbreak of a deadly disease known as acute hemorrhagic fever, which killed two people and left one gravely ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the summer of 2009, was probably caused by a novel virus scientists have never seen before.
Described this week in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens, the new microbe has been named Bas-Congo virus (BASV) after the province in the southwest corner of the Congo where the three people lived.
It was discovered by an international research consortium that included the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Davis (UCD), Global Viral, the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon, the Institut National de Recherche Biom?dicale, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Metabiota and others.
"Known viruses, such as Ebola, HIV and influenza, represent just the tip of the microbial iceberg," said Joseph Fair, PhD, a co-author and vice president of Metabiota. "Identifying deadly unknown viruses, such as Bas-Congo virus, gives us a leg up in controlling future outbreaks."
"These are the only three cases known to have occurred, although there could be additional outbreaks from this virus in the future," said Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine at UCSF and director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, who spearheaded the UCSF effort to identify the virus. Chiu and his team continue to work on new diagnostics to detect the virus so that health officials in Congo and elsewhere can quickly identify it should it emerge again.
One odd characteristic of the Bas-Congo virus, Chiu said, is that while a number of other viruses in Africa also cause deadly outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic fever?Ebola virus, Lassa virus and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus to name a few ?the new virus is unlike any of them.
Genetically it is more closely related to the types of viruses that cause rabies, which are known to infect people with a very different sort of disease?a neurological illness that is uniformly fatal if untreated but may take months to develop.
An antibody test developed in this study was applied to the one patient who survived and to others who had come into contact with him. It suggested that the disease may be spread from person to person but likely originated from some other source, such as an insect or rodent.
The identity of this animal "reservoir" and the precise mode of transmission for the virus remain unclear and are currently being investigated by Metabiota and the central African members of the consortium through the PREDICT Project of USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.
How the New Virus Emerged
In the summer of 2009, a 15-year old boy in a small rural community called Mangala village suddenly fell ill and developed a bleeding nose, bleeding gums and bloody vomit. He rapidly worsened, dying within three days of the first signs of illness.
A week later, a 13-year old girl who attended the same school and lived in the same neighborhood as the boy came down with a similar, serious illness. She declined just as rapidly and also died within three days. One week after that, the male nurse who cared for this girl began showing the same symptoms, and he was transferred to a hospital in Boma, a nearby port city that sits along the Congo River upstream from Africa's Atlantic coast.
Members of the consortium, who had initiated a project to diagnose unusual cases of severe hemorrhagic fever, obtained blood samples collected from the nurse by the Congolese doctors and sent them to the laboratory of Eric Leroy, PhD, doctor of veterinary medicine at the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon. There the samples were tested for traces of any known virus, but nothing was found. The Metabiota scientists then solicited the expertise of Chiu at UCSF and Eric Delwart at the Blood Systems Research Institute (BSRI) in San Francisco to aid in the diagnosis.
The researchers ultimately identified a completely new virus as the cause of the mysterious illness through a powerful strategy for identifying novel pathogens known as "deep sequencing," in which millions of DNA sequences are generated from a clinical sample and then pieced together using computer algorithms combined with human analysis.
Distinct Attributes of Bas-Congo
The Bas-Congo virus belongs to a family of viruses known as the rhabdoviruses, a large family of viruses that infect plants, insects and mammals, including humans. The most famous member of this family is the virus that causes rabies. But even among the rhabdoviruses, Bas-Congo is something of an outlier, being very genetically distinct from other members of the family.
What's most unusual about this virus, though, said Chiu, is what it does to people.
No other rhabdoviruses are known to cause the acute, rapid and deadly hemorrhagic fever seen in the three cases in the Congo. Rabies, for instance, can be a deadly disease if untreated, but the course of rabies in humans is nothing like the rapid and deadly onset seen with the Bas-Congo virus. There is some precedent, however, for hemorrhagic disease from rhabdoviruses in the animal kingdom: fish rhabdoviruses are known to cause hemorrhagic septicemia?acute bleeding and death?in affected fish.
The third patient had enormous amounts of BASV in his bloodstream just two days after he fell ill?more than a million copies in every milliliter of blood.
The BASV sequence was also used to design an antibody test for the virus, an effort led by Graham Simmons at the BSRI, another member of the consortium. Antibodies are blood immune proteins produced in response to an infection. The antibody test allowed the researchers to screen both the third patient with acute hemorrhagic fever and other people who had come into contact with the third patient, including the nurse who cared for him in the Boma hospital. High levels of BASV-specific antibodies were found in the third patient, establishing that he indeed had been infected with Bas-Congo virus. The same antibodies were also found in the second nurse, even though he never actually became sick.
"What this suggests is that the disease may be transmissible from person to person?though it's most likely to have originated from some other source," said Nathan Wolfe, PhD, founder and chairman of Global Viral, and a co-author on the paper. "The fact that it belongs to a family of viruses known to infect a wide variety of mammals, insects and other animals means that it may perpetually exist in insect or other 'host' species and was accidentally passed to humans through insect bites or some other means."

Those born in the 1960s and 1970s surely remember the 1980s when Japan?s economy rose to global prominence, showing the world that at least at that time, Japan truly was the land of the rising sun.
The Asian financial crisis struck in the late 1990s, but that even only temporarily chased Western investors away from the continent. Caution would give way to ebullience earlier this century as investors became enamored by the Chinese and Indian growth stories.

Flush with statistics about that pair representing two of the fastest growing economies in the world and that one or both would one day pass the U.S. in terms of economic heft, investors were once again seduced by Asian opportunities.
Renewed appetite for Asian exposure coincided with another boom, that of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry. As the Chinese and Indian economies became juggernauts, ETF sponsors have met investor demand for exposure to these countries coming up with everything from ETFs focused on Chinese technology companies to Indian small-caps.
ETF issuers did not stop there. As investors clamored for ways to access other Asian markets, ETF sponsors obliged.
In other words, the Chinese and Indian growth stories gave way to the burgeoning economies of Indonesia, Thailand and others. Since the March 2009 market bottom, the iShares MSCI Thailand Investable Market Index Fund (NYSEARCA:THD) and the Market Vectors Indonesia ETF (NYSEARCA:IDX) have been two of the best performing ETFs of any kind.
Those funds are still performing well, but a case can be made there is a new sheriff on the Asian investment block.
Investing in Philippines
EPHE: More to the Story?The Philippines, a Southeast Asian nation comprised of thousands of islands, is not completely unknown to Western investors, but the economy there is smaller comparable nations such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
A fair assessment might be to say the country is just starting to shed its under-the-radar status.
That much is proven by the iShares MSCI Philippines Investable Market Index Fund (NYSEARCA:EPHE), almost certainly the best way for U.S. investors to tap into the Philippine investment thesis without incurring unnecessary single stock risk.
Actually, there are not many Philippine American depositary receipts available, so EPHE is the best way to access the Philippines. Period.
EPHE debuted two years ago and now has over $101 million in assets under management, a sum that indicates investors have at least been intrigued by what the Philippines has to offer.
Those investors have not been disappointed.
EPHE is up 28.5% year-to-date, making it one of the best funds tracking?any?individual country in?any?region of the world.
EPHE?s performance does not paint the entire picture about the Philippine economy.
Arguably, when the various statistics are weighed together, one might wonder why the ETF has not performed even better and why allegedly smart economists and institutional investors are not embracing the Philippines to a larger extent.
Inflation is benign in the Philippines. That is something India cannot say.
Even Thailand has struggled with rising prices at various points in recent years. The Philippines could notch GDP growth of 6% this year and the country is well on its way to meeting or exceeding that number after posting growth of 6.1% in the first half of the year.
Then there is a fact about the Philippines that would make many Americans and Europeans gasp in disbelief: The country could be debt-free in a few years.
Currently sitting on a debt-to-GDP ratio of 50%, one the U.S., Japan and the Eurozone would die for, government spending is less than 19% of GDP.
Buoyed by $76 billion in international reserves, the Philippines? external balance sheet is nothing short of impressive. Standard & Poor?s, the ratings agency that is notoriously slow on the uptake, still has a junk?credit?rating on the Philippines, though it is BB+, the highest non-investment grade rating. S&P upgraded the Philippines in July and the country?s BB+ rating is its highest since 2003.
Adding to the bull case for the Philippines is a favorable slate of country rankings. Data from the Heritage Foundation indicate that when metrics such as economic freedom, freedom from corruption, land freedom and related metrics are combined, the Philippines scores better than other Southeast Asian economies such as Indonesia and Vietnam. The Philippines also tops Greece,?China, India and Russia.
Note to investors: One or two nice statistics here or there do not mean any country?s investment thesis is perfect, the Philippines included, so don?t throw all your money into EPHE.
The country has strides to make on the corruption front, corporate legal reform is essential and the country?s rate of poverty is high, even for a developing nation. Those factors should not be ignored, but the totality of the Philippines economic story indicates its (EPHE?s) best chapters have yet to be written.

SiriusXM said it will provide services that include emergency accident support, stolen vehicle tracking and roadside assistance in addition to its regular menu of satellite-delivered radio.
?Offering telematics services is a logical net step for SiriusXM,? the company?s CEO, Mel Karmazin, said in a press release. The new agreement strengthens the company?s relationship with Nissan, he added.
The Japanese carmaker said that, with the expanded SiriusXM offering, it wants to provide innovation that goes beyond the traditional areas of driving performance, fuel efficiency and safety.
Trisha Jung, director, Nissan Connected Services, said in the press release that the combination of audio entertainment and data services meets the growing expectations of ?the connected driver.?

?The study is important because it shows that a relatively simple nutrient can have significant effects in prenatal life, and that these effects likely continue to have a long-lasting influence on adult life,? said Eva K. Pressman, M.D., study author and director of the high-risk pregnancy program at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
?While our results won?t change practice at this point, the idea that maternal choline intake could essentially change fetal genetic expression into adulthood is quite novel,? the researcher added.
A long-time collaborator with researchers at Cornell, Pressman joined a team led by Marie Caudill, Ph.D., R.D., professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell, in studying 26 pregnant women in their third trimester who were assigned to take 480 mg of choline per day, an amount slightly above the standard recommendation of 450 mg per day, or about double that amount, 930 mg per day. The choline was derived from the diet and from supplements and was consumed up until delivery.
The team found that higher maternal choline intake led to a greater amount of DNA methylation, a process in which methyl groups ? one carbon atom linked to three hydrogen atoms ? are added to our DNA. Choline is one of a handful of nutrients that provides methyl groups for this process. The addition of a single methyl group is all it takes to change an individual?s epigenome.
Measurements of cord blood and samples from the placenta showed that increased choline, via the addition of methyl groups, altered epigenetic markers that govern cortisol-regulating genes. Higher choline lessened the expression of these genes, leading to 33 percent lower cortisol in the blood of babies whose mom?s consumed 930 mg per day.
Study researchers say the findings raise the exciting possibility that choline may be used therapeutically in cases where excess maternal stress from anxiety, depression or other prenatal conditions might make the fetal HPA axis more reactive and more likely to release greater-than-expected amounts of cortisol.
