Marshmallows: The Hub of Business Innovation? | Globe University ...

business, Globe UniversityStudents in the Business Communications class at Globe University-Woodbury took on The Marshmallow Challenge. You may be wondering why business students are playing with marshmallows. This challenge is a remarkably fun and instructive design exercise that encourages teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity?everything needed to communicate effectively in the business world.

The Marshmallow Challenge:

business, Globe UniversityThe task is simple: In 18 minutes, teams must build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.

?I found this challenge to be a great icebreaker,? said Brianna Astar, a Globe University health fitness specialist student. ?This challenge was a great way to learn how others communicate. It forces you to work as a team because it is not possible to form the structure by yourself. Plus, anytime food is involved, it gets everyone?s attention.?

The majority of the students also commented on how fun this challenge was and agreed that it did help them improve their communication and teamwork skills.

The Marshmallow Challenge is believed to be the fastest and most powerful technique for improving a team?s capacity to generate fresh ideas, build rapport and incorporate prototyping?all of which lie at the heart of effective innovation.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this exercise and found it very beneficial in learning how to work together, according to Brenna O?Connor, Business Communications instructor. Due to the success of this exercise, O?Connor plans to incorporate The Marshmallow Challenge in all of her future Business Communication classes.
