Holder appoints 2 US attorneys to lead leaks probe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two U.S. attorneys are taking over separate FBI investigations into leaks of national security information that critics have accused the White House of orchestrating to improve President Barack Obama's re-election chances, a claim Obama calls "offensive" and "wrong."

Recent news articles contained details of U.S. involvement in a partially successful computer virus attack on Iran's nuclear program and on the selection of targets for counterterrorism assassination plots. The leaked information generally painted Obama as a decisive and hands-on commander in chief.

"The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive. It's wrong," Obama told reporters at a news conference Friday. "And people I think need to have a better sense of how I approach this office and how the people around me here approach this office."

Obama promised investigations into the source of leaks about U.S. involvement in cyberattacks on Iran and drone strikes on suspected terrorists.

"We're dealing with issues that can touch on the safety and security of the American people, our families or our military personnel or our allies, and so we don't play with that," he said.

Hours later, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that two U.S. attorneys will lead a pair of criminal investigations already under way into possible unauthorized disclosures of classified information within the executive and legislative branches of government.

Holder said he was confident the prosecutors would follow the facts and evidence wherever they led.

"The unauthorized disclosure of classified information can compromise the security of this country and all Americans, and it will not be tolerated," he said.

Holder assigned Ronald Machen, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, and Rod Rosenstein, the U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland, to direct separate probes that are already being conducted by the FBI.

Three weeks ago, FBI Director Robert Mueller said the bureau had launched an investigation into who leaked information about an al-Qaida plot to place an explosive device aboard a U.S.-bound airline flight. Separately, calls from Capitol Hill have mounted urging a leak probe into a New York Times story a week ago about U.S. involvement in cyberattacks on Iran.

Obama said his administration has "zero tolerance" for such leaks and that there would be an internal administration probe.

"We have mechanisms in place where if we can root out folks who have leaked, they will suffer consequences," the president said. "In some cases, it's criminal. These are criminal acts when they release information like this. And we will conduct thorough investigations, as we have in the past."

Leaders of the Senate and House intelligence committees said Thursday they were drafting legislation to further limit access to highly classified information and possibly impose new penalties for revealing it. The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee said he will investigate recent leaks.

Lawmakers have pointed to recent stories by The New York Times, The Associated Press and other news organizations that contain previously secret information and cite anonymous U.S. officials.

The strongest claims came Tuesday from Obama's 2008 election opponent, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"They're intentionally leaking information to enhance President Obama's image as a tough guy for the elections," McCain said after taking to the Senate floor to list some of the alleged breaches. "That is unconscionable."

McCain called on the administration to appoint an outside special counsel to investigate.

In a statement Friday, McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Holder's decision "falls far short of what is needed" and repeated McCain's call for a special counsel.

The House Intelligence Committee chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said his committee would formally investigate the leaks but that he was concerned about the level of cooperation he would get from two government agencies.

"Just today, the CIA informed the (committee) that it cannot respond to our request for information regarding the leaks, a very troubling event indeed," Rogers said.

The CIA has come under fire for allegedly sharing with Hollywood filmmakers classified details of last year's U.S. raid into Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden.

A Justice Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information, said that some officials in the department's national security division recused themselves from one of the leak probes but that the department overall was investigating.

There are at least three investigations ongoing into disclosures of classified information.

Before becoming U.S. attorney, Machen helped lead the white-collar and internal investigation practices at the prominent Washington law firm of WilmerHale. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1997 to 2001.

Machen is leading a high-profile political corruption probe of officials in the District of Columbia. The latest development in that investigation came this week when District of Columbia Council chairman Kwame Brown resigned after being charged with lying about his income on bank loan applications and violating a city campaign law.

Brown pleaded guilty Friday.

Rosenstein was an associate independent counsel who worked for Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr from 1995 to 1997. He was co-counsel in the fraud trial of Jim and Susan McDougal, the former real estate partners of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Both of the McDougals were convicted in a trial that also resulted in the conviction of then-Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said he hopes that the Justice Department brings "the full force of the law against these criminals."

"We need to send a clear message to anyone who considers leaking sensitive information and putting Americans at risk: If you leak classified information, you will face jail time," Smith said in a statement.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., called Machen and Rosenstein "strong, capable, independent prosecutors" and said the Justice Department's consultation with the Judiciary and Intelligence committees was an aid to congressional oversight.

Posted by By Itster at 7 June, at 23 : 35 PM Print

You?ve probably already heard that getting too much sun could cause skin cancer. But do you really know the facts about skin cancer?
Consider the following skin cancer facts:
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
There are actually three different types of skin cancer, but one type is more deadly.
Contact with certain chemicals can also cause skin cancer.
There?s no doubt that skin cancer is a killer, but thankfully the news about sun exposure isn?t all bad. In fact, a small amount of sunshine is actually healthy because it provides our bodies with vitamin D.
To learn more about skin cancer and about the effects of sun exposure (both good and bad), take a look at the infographic below.

10 Things Trademark Owners Should Do on ICANN's Domain Name ...

By Doug Isenberg

After years of planning, months of applying and weeks of delays, ICANN is set to disclose the identities of approximately 2,000 new applied-for global top-level domain names (gTLDs) on June 13, 2012 ? a date known as ?Reveal Day.?

ICANN has stated that the application results will be posted on Reveal Day here: http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results

Reveal Day is likely to create a lot of confusion among all except those who have followed these developments most closely. So, in anticipation of widespread misunderstandings among trademark owners, the press and Internet users in general, here is a short list of the most important things to do on Reveal Day:

  1. Review the list of new gTLDs published by ICANN. If past performance is any indication, there will likely be some technical delays in accessing all of the published information, especially on Reveal Day itself. However, despite everyone?s curiosity, there is no urgency in gaining access to the information immediately (and some of it already has been voluntarily disclosed by applicants), so any slight delays should not create any meaningful concerns.
  2. Don?t panic. Remember that no gTLD on the application list has been approved. That is, no new gTLDs will become operational on Reveal Day. And, before any new gTLDs go live, they must go through a rigorous approval process at ICANN and survive any objections or legal challenges. It will certainly be 2013 before any new gTLDs are actually available for registration.
  3. Begin to consider whether you might want to file any objections to gTLD applications, including a ?legal rights? objection (that is, where ?the applied-for gTLD string infringes the existing legal rights of the objector?) or a ?community objection? (that is, where ?there is substantial opposition to the gTLD application from a significant portion of the community to which the gTLD string may be explicitly or implicitly targeted?).
  4. If you applied for one or more gTLDs, prepare to respond to any objections. As you know, filing an application was just the start of your process. Now, you need to see your application through to approval. Preparing in advance (that is, now) for potential objections could increase the likelihood of your success later.
  5. Watch for more details about the Trademark Clearinghouse. Designed to provide limited protections for trademark owners once registrations within the new gTLDs are available, ICANN?s new Trademark Clearinghouse will allow trademark owners to submit their marks for inclusion in a database. As I have said before, the Trademark Clearinghouse will be of little value, but it is something that all trademark owners should consider.
  6. Remember the UDRP. All registry operators for new gTLDs will be required to implement the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). As I have said before, the UDRP is ? in the words of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ? ?the only proven mechanism in place to absorb the impact of gTLD expansion.? Therefore, trademark owners can take some comfort that this useful legal tool will still be available to them as the cybersquatting problem surely explodes.
  7. Don?t get excited about the URS. Once touted as an even better legal solution to cybersquatting than the UDRP, the Uniform Rapid Suspension System (URS) is of limited value to trademark owners because it is not likely to be much quicker or much less expensive than the UDRP. Plus, the URS remedy is much more limited than in UDRP cases, because trademark owners can only get domain names suspended ? not transferred ? under the URS. In any event, the URS as a viable tool is still unknown given that ICANN has not yet announced whether any dispute resolution service is willing to serve as a provider (and the targeted low fees surely are discouraging service providers from signing up to administer the URS).
  8. Don?t question whether you should have applied for a gTLD of your own (that is, if you didn?t actually do so). It?s a moot point now. But, there will be opportunities in the future to apply again (according to ICANN, ?as expeditiously as possible,? whatever that means) ? and, perhaps, learn from the many lessons that will emerge from this unprecedented experience.
  9. Ignore the press. As a former newspaper reporter and magazine editor, I understand and appreciate the difficulties that the media have in generating interesting, relevant, timely and accurate news articles. The new gTLD process is a complicated one, and the first media reports are likely to be incomplete, misleading, sensational and perhaps even inaccurate. Fortunately, it won?t matter what any reporter or blogger (including yours truly!) has to say about the process. What matters is how you will respond to it.
  10. Talk with your attorney. Now. I know, this probably sounds self-serving ? and, maybe it is. But, it?s also good advice. An attorney who knows about gTLDs, domain name disputes and Internet law in general can help guide you through one of the most important changes that has taken place online since perhaps the creation of the World Wide Web itself.

Apply for Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women ProgramWow! What a freebie for women only?

This is so so unfair, how would they give only women this great opportunity?

Goldman Sachs is one those giant corporations I personally detest because of the level of selfishness they exhibit in most cases. When these guys got together and told the world, Facebook is worth a $100 billion, I said no way guys! I simply knew that another heist was underway and so far it looks like that but we need to wait longer. Ok, let me not digress, this should be a topic for another day.

The focus of today is that Goldman Sachs in partnership with Pan-African University is training and building capacity in our women and they should be applauded for that irrespective of what their motives are.

Why the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Scholarship Initiative?

Business owners need to build deeper understanding, skills and knowledge in the environment where they operate to be able to successfully sustain their businesses. Hence, the need for capacity building is an integral part of business development.

Increasing numbers of women are becoming leaders/managers of their own businesses and many are actually still struggling to achieve success. Evidence has shown that when a woman is empowered, she reinvests into her family, her environment and the world at large.

In Nigeria, opportunity has been thrown open to female entrepreneurs to build their capacity through the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Scholarship Initiative in collaboration with the Pan-African University and over 200 female entrepreneurs have tapped into this great opportunity. Why not join the league of successful female entrepreneurs today? This is a chance to take your business to the next level!

If you are in doubt, read the story of?Mrs. Ayodeji Megbope, the Moi-Moi seller that has travelled to different parts of the world and met with heads of states on account of her contact with this Goldman Sachs 10,000 women program.

Citta, a 33-year-old female elephant reacts after she chose a melon above a sign indicating a win for the Poland football team at Krakow zoo on Wednesday.

WARSAW, Poland - With a pig in Kiev, an elephant in Krakow and now, believe it or not, a ferret in Kharkiv, sports prognosticating has truly gone wild.

Two years after Paul the Octopus earned fame by correctly predicting eight matches at the World Cup in South Africa, several pretenders to the throne have cropped up in Poland and Ukraine, the co-hosts for the European Championship.

But they still have a lot to prove.

"As far as we are concerned, none have the form of Paul the Octopus," said Joe Crilly, a spokesman for British bookmaker William Hill. "And with so many to follow, there are undoubtedly going to be a few who get it wrong."

Paul the Octopus, who died a few months after the 2010 World Cup, lived at the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. He correctly predicted the outcome of all seven of Germany's matches at the tournament in South Africa, as well as Spain's win over the Netherlands in the final, by plucking a mussel out of a plastic box bearing a national flag.

Fame and, one can assume, a fortune of mussels followed.

But for Euro 2012, there's no shortage of successors with animal instincts.

Citta the elephant, a temperamental 33-year-old female pachyderm from India, lives at a zoo in Krakow. She was chosen over a donkey, a parrot and another elephant after she correctly predicted that Chelsea would win the Champions League title.

On Wednesday, she predicted that co-host Poland would beat Greece in the opening Euro 2012 match by choosing a melon marked Poland. She had a choice of others marked for Greece or for a draw.

In Kiev, a beer-loving pig named Khryak will chance Friday to make his first prediction only hours before the tournament kicks off in Warsaw at the National Stadium.

Fred the ferret is the newest kid on the block, but the professionals will be looking at all the all-seeing animals to see which one does the best.

"We will be keeping our eyes and ears open for any hint of a clairvoyant cat or telepathic trout," Crilly said.

Russia claims new missile can overcome missile defenses

Russia says it conducted a successful test of a new missile that is meant to outwit the NATO antimissile shield and has a maximum range of 10,000 miles.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / May 24, 2012

Within days of NATO's announcement that its European antimissile shield is now "provisionally operational," Russia has claimed to have tested a new type of intercontinental missile that can outwit the new missile defenses.

The new missile, which some Russian media said is named the "Avante-garde," was successfully fired on Wednesday from Plesetsk cosmodrome in northwestern Russia, and reportedly hit its target on the Kamchatka Peninsula, several thousand miles away, a few minutes later. The Russian Defense Ministry says the new weapon has a maximum range of about 10,000 miles and can carry a bigger payload than any previous Russian missile.

"This new intercontinental ballistic missile is intended to strengthen the capabilities of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, including its capabilities for overcoming antimissile defenses," Defense Ministry spokesman Vadim Koval told journalists.

"The missile was built with maximum use of existing components with new elements and technologies developed during the production of fifth-generation missile systems, in order to shorten its development time," he added.

Analysts say the new missile is probably a modification of the Topol-M, a modern, mobile ICBM that is well known in the West and is accounted for under the terms of the new START accord signed by US and Russian leaders two years ago. That treaty stipulates that both sides have the right to modernize their missile delivery systems as long as they remain under a ceiling of 1,550 deployed strategic warheads.

The new missile reportedly can boost into space faster than previous models thanks to a powerful new fuel, which would presumably enable it to outrun any ground-launched interceptors from NATO's European antimissile system.

The independent Interfax agency quoted a retired Russian missile commander, Gen. Viktor Yesin, as saying the new weapon was specifically designed as part of Russia's efforts to counter NATO's antimissile system, which is slated to become fully operational by 2018, as well as other regional shields being contemplated by the Pentagon.

"This is one of the technical means Russia?s political and military leadership has developed in response to America?s global system of missile defense," Yesin was quoted as saying.

Another potential Russian reaction is to deploy short range Iskander-M ground-to-ground missiles in the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad and around Russia's periphery, in order to be able to strike quickly against US missile defense systems.

Earlier this month, Russia's top general, Nikolai Makarov, even threatened to launch a preemptive strike against NATO's antimissile shield if it appears to undermine Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent.

Russian press reports suggest that the new missile is not only faster in the boost-phase than all its predecessors, but that it may also be able to maneuver during its flight in order to baffle enemy radars and dodge interceptors.

Media reports also say that a previous attempt to test the new missile on Sept. 27 failed, when it suffered an undisclosed malfunction and crashed just 10 miles from its launch site.
