5 Must Have Skills For An Internet Marketer | Graziadio Voice ...

Internet MarketerFor any graduate in business, one of the most exciting and growing careers now is in Internet marketing. According to occupational information provider ONET, search marketing strategist careers are projected to have a bright outlook, with an anticipated 51,000 additional jobs projected in the field over the next eight years.

With a median salary in 2011 of just under $80,000 per year, Internet marketing is one of the hottest business careers today. With this great job outlook there will also be very tough competition for these highly sought after positions. As an Internet marketing manager myself, there are five key things I suggest students to focus on to set themselves apart in this field and get one of these highly lucrative careers.

Understanding of how marketing and sales work together

I have noticed that many people attempt to jump-the-gun and enter the Internet marketing field without any basic knowledge of how marketing and sales departments work together. Both sales representatives and marketers have a great deal of knowledge; the two should work hand-in-hand because they have a great wealth of knowledge to share with one another. Sales representatives spend the most time with customers. In order to effectively market the product, marketers must understand the sales person?s perspective and be able to obtain information on what the customer wants and has to say. Although simple sounding, this can be a key differentiator for anyone looking to enter the Internet marketing field.

Technical background

Having a solid technical background is vitally important for the Internet marketer of today. Now I don?t mean you should be able to hand code an entire site in a day. Rather, having the ability to read and write basic HTML coding as well as translate marketing needs to a coder/developer is a very important and highly valuable skill. The marketer who understands the behind the scenes of their website will be a step ahead of the person who struggles to explain their vision to their development team.

Stats, stats, stats

In my years, I?ve had my fair share of interviewing candidates for marketing positions. While reading through r?sum?s, I stumbled upon two potential candidates. What differed from the one who landed the position from the other applicant? This person had exact numbers in my face. I didn?t have to wonder or ask how many. I could tell this person already knew how to market by numbers, use statistics, and analyze sums of data. A good marketer uses numbers to exemplify their ROI on campaigns, measure conversions, and track their marketing contribution versus revenue.

Ability to change tasks with extreme speed

It still amazes me how fast today?s online world demands the capability to keep up and evolve with intense changes. Nowadays, it is a must to quantify your turnover time with the pace of the world. Time is money, and everything should be done in a timely manner, so that money is not wasted. With today?s online campaigns, the speed of change can literally make or break them. The person who can shift what they do on a dime to catch the newest trend will quickly outpace their competition.

Content

Content is what really captures the attention of customers and creates high traffic. If your content is bland and boring, people will quickly turn their attention to the next thing. A good marketer has the skills to engage users from the beginning and convert them to regular visitors. Creativity is the key in what sets your product apart from the rest. But don?t forget the execution; the presentation is as important as the message. The ability to not only have an interesting message but the ability to show it in a way that is more digestible is as important as the info itself.
