If you asked 10 different internet marketing ?experts? what they recommend for an SEO strategy, odds are you?d get 10 different answers. What we do is not an exact science and what works for some websites may fall deathly flat for others. But if you asked those 10 experts what one thing they recommend above all others, you?ll probably get the same answer: Content.
If you look around the web, you?ll find that everyone?s main recommendation is ?create great content.? That?s fine, but some niches just aren?t that interesting. If your industry is a small niche or if your business is just flat-out boring to the masses, you aren?t going to create a viral content presence or take over social media with your witty and insightful updates that only go to a handful of followers. ?In those cases, what do you do?
There are some simple offline steps that you can take on your own to help boost your online presence in addition to your online strategy:
Strong Reputation
Do everything with your reputation in mind. It?s always been true that people who have a bad experience with a business will tell 10 of their friends vs. the customer who had a good experience who may only tell 1. Only now, 10 can actually be 100 if they start bashing you on social media. Maintain good business practices and stellar customer service at all times.
Strong Relationships
If you have strong relationships with your customers, they?ll talk about you. ?And word-of-mouth should really be called word-of-typing in 2012. People talk online. So your happy clients will post natural reviews on Google and Yelp, they?ll tell their friends in person and online that your business is worth dealing with. Those friends will visit you and when they have pleasant experiences, they?ll do the same. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. It?s the same old word-of-mouth you?ve always come to rely on, but with positive results for your online presence.
Brand Awareness
Keep your name out in front of people. Keep your advertising budget healthy and engage in some good, old-fashioned PR. The more people see the name of your business and understand what you do, the better. This means that they can find you online even if you don?t rank #1 for your favorite keyword. They?ll associate you with your products or services and look for you directly. The more people seek you out online, the better. Every click you get tells search engines that you are the go-to for your niche and keywords.
The biggest mistake that people make when embarking on an online marketing journey is to treat their online and offline marketing differently. That may have been the case 10 years ago, but with the passage of time, internet marketing is no different than the marketing of yore, and at the end of the day, whether you are doing online or offline marketing, there is no substitute for offering your customers outstanding service.
