In 2012, I chose a word to focus on. ?That word was strength. ?I had never focused on a word for an entire year before, and wasn't sure what would transpire. ?The truth is, that word, and the attributes associated with it, kept popping up into my day-to-day life. ?We went through our trials and tribulations as a family, and I had to muster the strength to get through them all. ?I faced an impossible foe and had to have the strength to not only forgive, but ask for forgiveness. ?And now, I'm having to summon the strength to not send my only child away to boot camp at age 10 because she is starting the hormonal "tween" phase way too soon!

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An official in Iraq's western Anbar province says two people have been wounded after bodyguards for a senior Sunni politician began shooting to disperse angry anti-government protesters.
Anbar provincial council member Talib Hamadi al-Dulaimi told The Associated Press the shooting happened near Ramadi Sunday during a visit by Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq. Sunni protesters have been rallying in the area for more than a week to protest over perceived second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government.
Al-Dulaimi says a dispute broke out and shots were fired after demonstrators insisted the Sunni official show support for their protest by submitting his resignation from the government.
Gunfire continued to ring out and protesters were seen throwing rocks at the entourage as it left the area.
Al-Mutlaq's office had no immediate comment.

Every New Year?s Day for the past decade, Carl Sanchez has been strumming his banjo in the 113-year-old Mummer?s Parade ? a tradition in which 10,000 men and women dressed in bright, colorful costumes, march and twirl for two miles up one of Philadelphia?s main streets.
The term ?Mummer? is German and means ?to costume or masquerade.? In the 1600s, Swedish settlers to Philadelphia?s outskirts celebrated Christmas by asking their neighbors for dessert and liquor by dressing up, and chanting and shooting firearms. The party eventually moved to New Year?s Day and evolved into a series of neighborhood parades. As more immigrants moved to the area, each group added their own cultural flair to the local customs. In 1901, the tradition of the first recognized and judged Mummers Parade began.
?It?s a unique parade,? says Sanchez, 45, who travels from New Jersey to Philadelphia every year. ?There?s nothing else like this in the U.S. It?s steeped in the tradition of Philadelphia?A whole year?s worth of work all for one day ? it?s really something special.?
Sanchez is one of the only Latinos in the parade. Although his dad was born in Puerto Rico, he is a part of the 64-member Polish-American String Band ? a band that has been performing in the Mummer?s Parade for the past 80 years, and has won 11 first place prizes within that time.
?I am one of the few Latinos in the Parade,? says Sanchez who recently found out that a friend of his father?s son from Puerto Rico also plays in one of the string bands of the parade. ?It?s a strange coincidence.?
Although Sanchez grew up in New Jersey, he says he feels a bond to Philadelphia, because that?s where his parents lived when they first got married in the 1950?s, and it is the city where his wife is from.

He?also enjoys?the?fact that?even though?he plays in a Polish-American band, due to his father-in-law recruiting him, every year they have a different theme. This year, it?will be Brazilian.

Venezuela's vice-president arrived in Havana on Saturday in a sudden and unexpected trip to visit Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as he recovers from cancer surgery.
Communist Party newspaper Granma published online a photo of a smiling Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolas Maduro being greeted at the airport in the Cuban capital by Bruno Rodriguez, the island's foreign minister.

Granma added that Maduro was accompanied by Venezuelan Attorney General Cilia Flores.
The previous night in Caracas, Venezuela, Maduro did not specify how long he would be away but said Energy Minister Hector Navarro would be in charge of government affairs in the meantime. Maduro's announcement came at the end of a long speech at the inauguration of a state governor, and he offered no information on the purpose of his visit beyond seeing Chavez.
In a speech Saturday, Venezuela's National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello said only that Maduro went to Cuba to visit with Chavez and urge him "to follow his treatment." Venezuelan press officials in Caracas said they had no additional information Saturday.
Maduro's trip comes amid growing uncertainty about Chavez's health.
The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his scheduled Jan. 10 inauguration for a new six-year term. There have been no updates on Chavez's condition since Maduro announced Monday night that he had received a phone call from the president who was up and walking.

Venezuela's opposition criticized Maduro for what they said was a lack of transparency surrounding Chavez's health.
"What I still don't understand is who is president," Lawmaker Alfonso Marquina said. "Who is governing the country now? As for the purpose of this sudden and improvised trip, only the national government knows."
Maduro is the highest ranking Venezuelan official to visit Chavez since the surgery. Bolivian President Evo Morales travelled to Cuba last weekend in a quick trip that only added to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition. Morales has not commented publicly on his visit or even confirmed that he saw Chavez while he was there.
Before leaving for Cuba, Chavez acknowledged the precariousness of his situation and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice-president if a new presidential election was necessary. Although Chavez has delegated some administrative powers to Maduro, he did not leave the vice-president officially in charge of the presidency.
Venezuela's Democratic Unity bloc of opposition parties suggested Saturday it was time for the government to declare the president temporarily absent from power.
"They are trying to hide what every day is a fact: The government does not want to recognize that there is a temporary absence of the president from his duties," the bloc said in a statement.
On Friday morning, Maduro read a New Year message from Chavez to Venezuelan troops, though it was unclear when the president composed it.
"I have had to battle again for my health," Chavez said in the message. He expressed "complete faith in the commitment and loyalty that the revolutionary armed forces are showing me in this very complicated and difficult moment."
A group of opposition candidates demanded Friday that Maduro provide an official medical report on Chavez's health. Lawmaker Dinorah Figuera said the country needs "a medical report from those who are responsible for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the president."

A legal fight is brewing over what should happen if Chavez, who was re-elected in October, cannot return in time for the inauguration before the National Assembly.
National Assembly Diosdado Cabello insisted Monday that Venezuela's constitution allows the president to take the oath before the Supreme Court at any time if he cannot do it before the legislature on Jan. 10.
Opposition leaders argue the constitution requires that new elections be held within 30 days if Chavez cannot take office Jan. 10. They have criticized the confusion over the inauguration as the latest example of the Chavez government's disdain for democratic rule of law and have demanded clarity on whether the president is fit to govern.

If Victor Hugo were alive today, one would imagine that he would be pleased with Tom Hooper?s film adaptation of his world-renowned novel ?Les Mis?rables.?
According to the press notes, the initial idea for making a film version of one of the world?s most popular musicals came about 25 years ago. The end result is nothing short of spectacular, due in large part to the all-hands-on-deck involvement of the creators behind the musical.
Staying true to the original story, the film opens in the year 1815 with Jean Valjean?s (Hugh Jackman) release after his 19-year imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. After being shown mercy and kindness by a bishop, Valjean vows to reinvent himself. And after breaking parole, he disappears from Javert?s (Russell Crowe) capture while building a new life as a mayor and wealthy factory owner.
\>");Several years later, the poor, unfortunate beauty Fantine (Anne Hathaway), who is working at Valjean?s factory to pay innkeeper Th?nardier (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his cruel wife (Helena Bonham Carter) to look after her daughter Cosette, is kicked to the curb quite literally. We witness one of the most tragic transformations as Fantine quite literally sells everything she owns, including finally her body.
Meanwhile, serving as a backdrop, the French people are becoming ever more desperate as most are living in abject poverty, and there is growing distrust of the French government.
Valjean promises a dying Fantine that he will raise Cosette as his own daughter, and his encounter with the Th?nardiers provides the only respite from the otherwise tragic and somber storyline.
Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter are fully in their element, providing much needed levity and comic relief in their performances as beguiling, deceptive innkeepers with a penchant for stealing.
The love triangle between a grown-up Cosette (Amanda Seyfried), Marius (Eddie Redmayne), who is an idealistic revolutionary hailing from a wealthy family, and Th?nardier?s daughter ?ponine (Samantha Barks) is beautifully portrayed.

While the chemistry between Seyfried and Redmayne is believable, it is Samantha Barks?s performance (in her first cinematic debut no less!) that steals the show. Her rendition of ?On My Own? will touch you to your core.
Given the popularity of the play, with over 60 million people around the world having seen the show, a full synopsis is probably unnecessary. Suffice it to say that ?Les Mis?rables? the film not only faithfully adheres to Hugo?s storyline but also that its groundbreaking approach takes it to a new level of filmmaking.
In hoping to stay true to the powerful emotional backbone of the musical, director Tom Hooper (who won an Oscar for directing ?The King?s Speech?) made the daring decision to have the actors sing their lyrics live while filming versus singing to playback.
This decision not only adds to the challenges faced by the actors; it accentuates and deepens the emotionality of the film and the immediacy of the characters, to the point where you might even experience chills down your spine. Anne Hathaway?s chillingly terrific version of ?I Dreamed a Dream? will give you goose bumps and bring tears to your eyes.
What is simply extraordinary is the level of commitment and devotion from Hooper and his cast.
Hugh Jackman, according to the production notes, was so dedicated to looking the part of an emaciated Valjean that he went without water for 36 hours before shooting his opening scene. Anne Hathaway lost 25 pounds in 5 weeks and chose to have her real hair cut in the scene where her character Fantine sells her hair and teeth to support daughter Cosette. And Russell Crowe was so passionate about auditioning for the role of Javert that he chose to walk in pouring rain to his audition.
Hooper?s ?Les Mis?rables? is a successful marriage of the best of both worlds: You have the epic grandness of movie-making magic enhanced by a musical?s intimacy and emotional depth, made even more touching with the live singing throughout the film.
Enthusiastically recommended for fans of the Broadway show and for folks who appreciate quite literally feeling the human experience and all the major human emotions?love, loss, sacrifice, redemption, compassion, justice, and honor.

Long associated with luck and prosperity, no New Year?s celebration is complete without the mighty blackeyed pea!?Sadly, though, this Southern custom?rarely brings?good fortune to the?porcine folk whose hocks often wind up in traditional cuisine. This recipe offers savory holiday deliciousness, but?without chopping off anyone?s ankles ? and your?slow cooker?does most of the work, while you celebrate with family and friends.?What?great way to kick off?the New Year!
Soak blackeyed peas overnight, or quick-soak according to package directions.
Drain and rinse the soaked blackeyes. Combine blackeyed peas, onion, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper in your slow cooker. Stir in the melted vegan butter or coconut oil?and broth; the liquid should cover the blackeyes by about 1? to 1-1/2?. Splash in a bit more broth if needed (depending on the size of your slow cooker).
Cook on high heat for 1-1/2 hours.
After 1-1/2 hours, stir?in greens?a handful at a time, giving each bunch?a moment?to wilt before adding more. Cook for another 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours on high, until blackeyes are as done as you like them. To me, this dish works best when the?blackeyes and greens?are both?well?past al dente ??pretty soft, but not overshooting into mushy.
When you?re happy with the texture of the blackeyes and greens, stir in the liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, red wine vinegar, Bragg?s or organic soy sauce, and hot sauce. I personally recommend?fairly generous sprinklings of the hot sauce, Old Bay, and smoke flavoring!
Turn?the slow cooker heat?to low, to keep the greens and blackeyes warm for second helpings. Remove bay leaves, serve with sweet cornbread, and enjoy!
Makes about 6 large servings; preparation time: soak time plus 30 minutes; cooking time: 4 to 5 hrs.
This recipe works well as a make-ahead dish:?prep your?greens, soak the peas, and chop your garlic and onion the day before. MOSCOW (AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport while landing on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing at least four people.
Officials said there were eight people aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings that was flying back from the Czech Republic without passengers to its home at Vnukovo Airport.
Emergency officials said in a televised news conference that four people were killed and another four severely injured when the plane rolled off the runway into a snowy field and disintegrated.
Russia's state television showed photos of the plane's wreckage, with the cockpit sheared off from the fuselage and a large chunk gashed out near the tail.
The crash occurred amid light snow, but other details were not immediately known.
Vnukovo airport spokeswoman Yelena Krylova said it had enough personnel and equipment to keep the runway fully functional. The airport resumed receiving planes after a break of several hours.
Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.
Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A week after shooting as if they were blindfolded, the 10th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes regained their touch.
Deshaun Thomas scored 17 points and four others also hit double digits as they shot 57 percent from the field in an 87-44 victory over Chicago State on Saturday.
"When we made our first shot today, I turned to the coaches and said, `Hey, we're 1 for 1. That's 1,000 percent. This is awesome,"' coach Thad Matta said, smiling. "I was pleased with how we shot the ball today."
The game was Ohio State's first since losing 74-66 to No. 6 Kansas a week earlier. In that game, the Buckeyes played good defense and worked to get open on offense but could not hit shots - even when unguarded. They mustered just 31 percent shooting from the field (20 of 65).
Against Chicago State, they hit 33 of 58 shots from the field including 8 of 17 3-pointers (47 percent).
Much of that success came after the Buckeyes had tried to shoot over a Chicago State zone. After a while, however, they decided to go inside more and drive to the basket. That strategy paid huge dividends.
"If you look at the numbers, we shot more game-like shots throughout practice and the week we had off," said point guard Aaron Craft, who ended up with 10 points - his first double-figure scoring game since November. "We're taking shooting a little more seriously."
LaQuinton Ross added 15 points, Lenzelle Smith Jr. had 13, Amedeo Della Valle had a career-high 11 for the Buckeyes (10-2), who complete an eight-game homestand when they host Nebraska in the Big Ten opener on Wednesday.
Ohio State built a 37-24 lead at the half but then completely overwhelmed the Cougars.
"They came out in the second half and they let us know, `We're the big boys.' They came and let us know, `We are a Top-10 team,"' Chicago State coach Tracy Dildy said. "The second half was all Ohio State."
Quinton Pippen, a nephew of ex-Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen, had 12 points for Chicago State (3-12), which fell to 0-11 away from home with its fourth straight defeat. The Cougars' regular season is half over already with one more game to play in 2012.
They don't get to go home right away, either. They play at Toledo on New Year's Eve. They also play the first two games of 2013 away, at No. 20 UNLV on Jan. 3 and then the Great West Conference opener on Jan. 12 at New Jersey Institute of Technology - capping a seven-game road trip stretching from Oregon to Texas to Nevada and then to New Jersey.
After hitting five of their last six shots from the field to end the half and build that 13-point lead, the Buckeyes opened the second half by making their first four attempts from the field. A 10-2 blitz at the outset of the second half swelled the lead to 47-26.
The Cougars never got closer than 17 points again.
Although Ohio State shot much better from the field, it had an awful day at the free throw line. The Buckeyes managed to make just 13 of 27 free throws. It got so bad there was derisive cheering whenever a player hit a foul shot in the second half.
"I'm very disappointed about it," said Smith, who was 0 for 4 at the line. "It lets me know what I've got to work on. When I step to the line I've got to be able to knock those down."
The Buckeyes will continue to work on their shooting. They also had a bad night from the field in their only other loss, a 73-68 setback at Duke in which they shot just 33 percent from the field.
In a small surprise, 6-foot-11 Amir Williams started at center ahead of the team's only senior, 6-8 Evan Ravenel.
Williams scored four points, had four rebounds, and blocked a shot in 15 minutes. Ravenel had five points, 10 rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes.
"Amir had practiced very well and, truth be told, Evan didn't practice well," Matta said. "From the standpoint of Evan being the only senior on this team, we hold him to a pretty high standard in terms of what we expect from him day in and day out. He's been in college for five years. I'll be honest I loved what he gave us off the bench today."
The game was played on a new hardwood court at Value City Arena. This one features the outline of the state of Ohio underneath the Ohio State logo at midcourt.
Thomas said he believed the Buckeyes were ready for the trials of the Big Ten.
"Yeah, I think we are," he said. "Coach is going to have us ready for the challenge."

We all know that being in love is one of the very best feelings in the world. When we fall in love, we often believe that our in-love feelings are going to last forever.
In my counseling practice, I've worked with countless people who believed that, this time, the love would last.
Take Benjamin, for example. Benjamin had been married for 22 years when he decided to divorce his wife. He was tired of not feeling connected and intimate with her. He experienced her as closed and resistant, and he wanted a relationship with an open woman.
Soon after the divorce, Benjamin met Rachel at the home of a friend. They connected immediately. Benjamin called me, ecstatic. "I know it's really early in this relationship -- we've only known each other a couple of weeks, but I think I'm in love. It feels so good to be with an open and caring woman."
"Benjamin, please take your time. You are just out of a long marriage and you have barely settled into your new life. It really does take time to know someone. I'm glad you and Rachel are enjoying your time with each other, but please don't rush into anything."
I knew this was likely to fall on deaf ears. I've seen it so many times.
Two months after meeting, the bloom was off the rose.
"Rachel runs away when she is upset. It's frustrating to me to not be able to work things out with her. And she doesn't take good care of herself in a lot of ways. She takes care of everyone but herself."
Benjamin very much wanted to be in love, but he had not made the choices that would lead to lasting love.
Five Choices to Help You Stay in Love
1. Learn to love yourself
Do the inner work you need to do to be happy on your own. If you are abandoning yourself by not taking responsibility for your feelings, judging yourself, turning to various addictions, or making someone else responsible for making you feel full, loved, safe and adequate, you will meet someone who is also abandoning themselves in various ways. We meet each other at our common level of self-abandonment or health, so do the work you need to do to feel happy, peaceful and full of love inside. You don't need to be fully healed, as much healing can take place within a relationship, but you do need to know how to love yourself so you can share your love with others.
2. Take it slow
One of the major mistakes that many people make is moving too fast -- including having sex too early. For a sexual relationship to be deeply satisfying on the physical as well as on the emotional level, there needs to be deep caring and connection. Early "in-love" feelings are often nothing more than infatuation, as truly being in love happens over time -- if it is going to happen. If someone is rushing you into a relationship, be very cautious. Behind the beautiful words and dazzling pursuit may lurk neediness and narcissism.
3. Ask in-depth questions
Ask the important questions -- about values, money, children, religion/spirituality, past relationships. If you are afraid to be forthright in your questions, then the fear itself is letting you know that your fear of rejection may be in charge -- which means you have more inner work to do.
4. Don't shy away from conflict
All relationships have some conflict, and much can be learned from how you each deal with conflict. If you are avoiding the important questions, giving yourself up to keep the peace, or not speaking up for yourself, you will not learn what you need to regarding how the two of you handle conflict. If your new love closes down, gets angry or furious, goes into resistance or defensiveness, or turns to an addiction, this does not bode well for staying in love. An inability to resolve conflict is a major reason why in-love feelings fade away.
If your new love briefly does these protective behaviors, but then opens to learning with you, great. But if he or she does not open within the same day as the conflict, then it will be very hard for issues to get resolved between you.
5. Appreciation rather than judgment
You are not likely to fine someone who has everything you want, but hopefully he or she has many of the qualities you value. Instead of focusing on what you don't like and trying to change your partner with judgment, appreciate what is wonderful about your new love. This doesn't mean avoiding problems, as it is vital to explore the difficulties -- with an intent to learn -- but being judgmental is one of the quickest ways to put the lid on love.
While you will not always feel "in love" with your partner, following these five choices will give you a very good chance of feeling loving and connected with your partner much of the time.

Travel-sized toiletries are often more expensive relative to their normal-sized counterparts. Reader ungullible shares a trick for refilling your travel-sized toothpaste bottles.
When we noted that children-sized toothpaste was TSA-compatible, ungullible shared an even cheaper solution: buy one travel-sized bottle and refill it.
I took two flip-top toothpaste lids, cut off the lids, and glued the top openings together to create a refill adapter. So now when my travel sized toothpaste tube gets empty, I use my adapter to connect the travel tube to my full-sized tube, squeeze, and refill.
We couldn't get ungullible to respond with a picture, but it's pretty easy to see what this would look like: two flip-top lids detached from their tubes and glued together at the "mouth." With some finagling, you could probably refill any toothpaste tube without an "adapter," but this trick would certainly make the process easier.

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)- If you hold a house party and a friend comes over and leaves intoxicated, are you responsible for what happens to him after he leaves your house?
Legal experts say Virginia?s laws may seem surprising.
It?s the time of year where people like to party to ring in the New Year and perhaps toss back a drink or two with friends and family.
It?s also prime season for DUI checkpoints because accidents can tragically change a family?s life forever.? So police in Central Virginia are warning everyone out there that accountability starts at home.
?It?s a scare tactic,? said Donte Henderson of Chesterfield. ?They?re trying to get people to think about drinking and driving. It?s that season where some good folks are going to leave parties with the intent of just going home. But things will happen. I think police are taking the right steps.?
But if it?s your party, just how responsible are you for an intoxicated friend or family member?s actions?
??Dram shop? is a law that holds a person that sold someone alcohol liable in a bar or commercial setting,? says CBS-6 legal expert Todd Stone. ??A ?social host liability? is when you host a party and you?re serving someone alcohol. In Virginia, there isn?t a civil or criminal liability perspective unless it deals with alcohol consumption and a minor.?
?I feel if you don?t tell them then you are responsible, but if you say ?hey, don?t go and give me your keys,? and they insist on leaving then that?s their problem,? said Chris Anderson of Chesterfield.? ?You can only do but so much.?
Police say just play it safe by telling a family member or friend to stay at your place or call them a cab. ??While legal expert Stone says you may not be legally liable, remember, if something happens your conscience may get to you.

Kevin Smith is hoping to leave the movie biz on a high note. The director has revealed plans to release what he expects will be his last directorial effort: "Clerks 3," the final installment in his slacker saga that began with the 1994 flick that put the indie filmmaker on the map.
Smith's announcement follows the news that his hockey flick "Hit Somebody" will now be turned into a six-part miniseries on an unannounced network.

"So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III #TaDa," he tweeted.
2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the original film, which was shot in a convenience store and continues to have a cult following. The movie is responsible for launching Smith's career, and he'd later go on to direct indie staples like "Chasing Amy," "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back."
"Instead of letting people [guess] for years, I said, 'I will do 'Clerks 3,' and by 2014 it is the 20th anniversary. We're going to mark it somehow, God willing, with 'Clerks 3,'" Smith said in an interview with "Good Day LA." "We need Jeff Anderson to come back and say yes."

Alec Ogletree has been a wrecking crew all year and isn't ready to move on just yet from Georgia.
Alec Ogletree is one of the best defensive players in college football and would certainly be a first-round pick if he decided to declare for the 2013 NFL Draft.
However, Ogletree isn't ready to commit to anything, saying he hasn't come to that point in the road yet, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"Right now I?m still focusing on this season," said Ogletree, who averaged nearly 11 tackles per game the second half of the season. "I?ve got the rest of this week to go, then I?ll talk to my parents about whatever I?m going to do after the bowl game, then make a decision . . . I?m here right now and that?s all I?m worried about."
Ogletree has been one of the key members of Georgia's dominant defense along with Jarvis Jones, forming a devastating linebacker corps.
At this point, Ogletree is considered somewhat of a sure bet to move onto the next level, but the junior is currently just focused on bringing the Capital One Bowl trophy back to Athens with him.
Ogletree has yet to ask the NFL Draft Advisory Board for an evaluation, something that is customary for any player getting ready to enter the draft. The junior still has a few weeks to make his decision and a game left to play.
