Woodworking has been a long time custom in our family as well as helping us to stay close through the years. Some of these are pretty simple pieces and some are much nicer and more difficult to make. And our family is not alone as at least some wood working has been an significant part of many families.
Doing a wood project can be a lot of fun and a great addition to your home. Also many woodworkers use their abilities in the woodworking shop to build gifts. These can be extremely special coming from a loved family member and can be a lasting family memory. We are extremely blessed with many such ?gifts? ourselves.
Our home is full of family heirlooms that have wonderful meaning and great memories. Most of these are hand-made woodworking pieces. The table in our breakfast room was built by my brother-in-law and I, way back before he became my brother-in-law! I designed and built our home with a lot of assistance, especially my father. My wife has done a great job decorating it (Maybe I will get her to do a web site featuring it one day).
Hanging on the walls are paintings done by my mother, my wife, and some other friends and family. And I can?t forget the many portraits of our kids when they were babies! And photos of them as they have grown-up placed down the hall as well as many other special spots. And we also have, like many of you I?m sure, our children?s ?projects? framed and hung up for every one to enjoy.
Our home also contains a lot of very special hand-built woodworking projects from my wife?s dad and grandfather. Desks and Hope Chest?s that are so ?fine built? that you could not believe them to be made by an individual small woodworker these days. They have become works of art in themselves. The time and pains-taking quality are an unbelievable labor of love.
And it goes on with a lot more heirlooms, many of wood and some not. I hope you will see your future wood project as what it might be ? a family heirloom for generations to come.
