By NBC News staff

Aurora, Colo., police say an armed man was believed to be holding hostages inside a home early Saturday morning, NBC affiliate KUSA reported.

Officers were called to a town home around 3 a.m. after reports of shots fired.

"We do believe there is an armed and dangerous man inside and possibly up to 3 to 4 people inside with him," Sgt. Cassidee Carlson of the Aurora Police Department told KUSA. Calls from NBC News to the Aurora Police Department have not yet been returned.

Carlson said it's unclear if anyone is injured. Negotiators were at the scene, KUSA said.

Aurora police sent out emergency notifications for residents in the area.?

Carlson told KUSA police have spoken on the phone with the suspect.

"We've been able to contact him intermittently," Carlson said. "We haven't been able to keep contact with him. At this point, we're playing it the safest way we can."

Several nearby homes have been evacuated for safety reasons.
