SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Google's Chrome browser can now be used to surf the Web on the iPhone and iPad.

The Chrome application released Thursday is the latest volley in the escalating rivalry between Google and Apple, the maker of the popular mobile devices.

Google's attempt to supplant Apple Inc.'s own Safari browser comes a day after it unveiled its plans to sell a low-priced tablet computer to compete against the iPad and Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.

The arrival of Chrome on Apple's mobile operating system comes a month after Yahoo Inc. released a browser called Axis for the iPhone and iPad.

Chrome, though, is already dueling with Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer for the bragging rights as the world's most popular browser.

Google Inc. revealed Thursday that Chrome now has 310 million active users.

Calif. Likely Among First States With Health Insurance Exchange ...

SACRAMENTO (KCBS) ? After Thursday?s U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act, several million Californians could be among the first in the nation to qualify for government subsidized insurance because of state efforts.

Unlike many states, California did not wait for a ruling on the constitutionality of the health care reform law to begin work on its insurance exchange, said Peter Lee, executive director of the California Health Benefit Exchange.

?What?s really been a distraction from our going full speed ahead has been pushed aside,? he said, including more aggressive outreach and advertising to teach Californians about the exchange.

California Likely To Be Among First States With Insurance Exchange Required By Health Care Reform Law

Lee said nearly half of the estimated 7 million Californians currently without health insurance will qualify for some kind of federally subsidized plan.

?The exchange is going to make it very affordable for over 3 million Californians. Those are folks who will get credits that will help them buy the private health plan that they want that?s right for them,? he said.

They will join the 500,000 Californians are already reaping the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, including young people allowed to stay on their parents plans and others who remain insured despite pre-existing medical conditions.

The subsidized plans are not only for low-income people. Lee said a family of four earning as much as $90,000 a year, for example, would also qualify for federal help to buy private insurance.

Shopping for health plans on the exchange begins in October 2013. States have until January 1, 2014 to have their health insurance exchanges up and running.

DIY Chinese Lamborghini Lookalike is a Big Boy's Toyota, No Bull

If you believe beauty's only skin deep, you're gonna love the LP640, a home-made homage to the mighty Lamborghini Murcielago LP64 built by a skilled Chinese car craftsman in his workshop garage. If you love it enough to want to buy it, you're in luck: the builder's listed it for 420,000 yuan (about $66,000) provided the buyer pays a 50% down payment.

What you get is what you see... and less. The DIY "Shanzai" (imitation) Lambo is based on a second-generation Toyota MR2 (left), a mid-engine automobile made from 1989 through 1999.

The model W20 MR2 displays a noticeable resemblance to the Ferrari 348 and the Ferrari F355, so much so that it acquired the nickname ?poor man's Ferrari? and aftermarket suppliers produced kits designed to enhance the resemblance. It may be that the unnamed Chinese craftsman who came into possession of an otherwise unremarkable red MR2 was inspired after seeing one or more of these automotive cosmetic surgeries.

Cosmetic is the word: the LP640's body is built on the original MR2's chassis and is powered by the original 175 hp engine. The builder mentions the addition of stainless steel, steel pipe and steel plate in the driver and passenger side doors. He also states the car's symbol plaque, glass, grille, tail lights and exterior accessions are ?all original factory parts?... if these are made in China for Lamborghini, that makes perfect sense.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- Middle Tennessee State University is making final arrangements for an academic and cultural exchange with Meliksah University in Turkey.

Meliksah, founded in 2008, has about 2,000 students. It's known as a research center with an emphasis on mechanical engineering, science and economics.

The agreement would allow third-year students from Turkey to finish their studies at MTSU and earn degrees from both institutions. It also would allow for faculty and staff exchanges and cultural opportunities between the two.

Meliksah, in Kayseri, is one of our four universities serving the Anatolia region of Turkey.

UCLA researchers develop nanoscale microwave oscillators, promise better and cheaper mobile devices

At a size of just 100 nanometers, it may not be much to look at, but a new type of microwave oscillator developed by researchers at UCLA could open the door to mobile communication devices that are smaller, cheaper and more efficient. As PhysOrg reports, unlike traditional silicon-based oscillators (the bit of a device that produces radio-frequency signals), these new oscillators rely on the spin of an electron rather than its charge to create microwaves -- a change that apparently bring with it a host of benefits. That includes a boost in signal quality, and a dramatic reduction in size. The new nanoscale system is fully 10,000 times smaller than current silicon-based oscillators, and can even be incorporated into existing chips without a big change in manufacturing processes. As with most such developments, however, it remains to be seen when we'll actually see it put into practice.

Panic as cops kill cops at Mexico City airport

Travelers run for cover as federal officers are killed by cops suspected of drug trafficking. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

MEXICO CITY -- Three policemen died in a shootout with two other officers suspected of drug trafficking at Mexico City's airport on Monday, as panicked travelers scrambled for cover in the busy facility.

The shootout occurred when three federal officers approached the two suspects in the airport's Terminal 2, which handles international and domestic flights. Two agents were killed at the terminal and another later died of his injuries in hospital.

More than a dozen shots were heard, Milenio Television reported. Television footage showed a body lying on the floor of the terminal in what appeared to be a publicly accessible area of the airport.

Three shots rang out at first, witness Israel Lopez, a 23-year-old Mexico City student who had gone to the airport to see off a friend, told The Associated Press. Lopez didn't see who those shots were directed at, but then the gunfire came closer.

Airport spokesman Jorge Andres Gomez said authorities are going through the security cameras to know the exact events of the shooting.

"We were in the food court, and some policemen came in and started shooting at another policeman who was on the floor," Lopez told the AP. "We dove to the floor and covered ourselves with chairs."

Lopez said the shooters wore blue uniforms like those of federal police who provide security at the airport. He said the shooters then ran to the parking area "as if they were pursuing somebody," and he lost sight of them.

'One of the safest places'
Robert Gray, an evangelical missionary from Hart, Michigan, but who has lived with his family in the city of Puebla for the past four years, arrived at the airport after the shooting with his wife, two daughters and son to catch a flight back to the U.S. to visit family.

"It's surprising to see it happening at the airport. It's one of the safest places in the city," Gray told the AP.

The suspects, who remain at large, are believed to be part of a larger group of officials involved in a cocaine ring, Mexico's security ministry said in a statement.

"The Federal Police has identified the two officers who opened fire and several investigative units are now focused on capturing them," the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement.

Airport spokesman Jorge Gomez told Milenio that aircraft departures and arrivals continued normally after the incident.

The airport said in a press statement that the terminal and flights were operating normally following what it described as "a dispute in an open-access area." But the food court remained blocked to public access for hours after the shooting.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Mexico City has seen relatively low murder rates compared to the rest of the country, where drug violence has killed around 55,000 people in the past five-and-a-half years.

But attacks have been creeping up in the capital and its surrounding neighborhoods, with more than 300 gangland killings recorded last year.

Mexico's airports and ports are busy areas for drug smugglers. So far this year federal police have seized more than 440 pounds of cocaine at the capital's airport, double the amount taken there last year.

In 2007, the severed heads of three employees of a customs brokerage firm were found near the airport and in the nearby state of Mexico.

The decapitations were apparently retaliation for the seizure of a half-ton of Colombian cocaine at the airport, officials said at the time.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest?

In 2008, federal police chief Edgar Millan was gunned down inside his Mexico City home, and one of the suspects in that killing had worked as an anti-drug officer at the Mexico City airport.

The suspect had a notebook with detailed information on drug trafficking at the airport, and officials said federal investigations into those operations may have been a key motive for Millan's killing.

Iowa Mission of Mercy to bring free dental care to Davenport - WQAD 8

With the Supreme Court poised to rule on the Affordable Care Act in coming days, it makes a special dental program even more timely.

The Iowa Mission of Mercy is coming to Davenport?s RiverCenter on October 5 and 6.

?It will be a full house,? said Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba.

Local dentists are joining forces with the Iowa Dental Association and Iowa Dental Foundation.

?As we see more and more folks not having access to dental insurance through their jobs, it becomes a huge problem to get folks dental care,? said Dr. Mary Mariani, a Davenport dentist and incoming president of the Iowa Dental Association.

Scenes from last year?s mission in Sioux City help to pinpoint the need. The two-day clinic served more than 1,300 patients. They came for cleanings, fillings and more elaborate care.

One patient, Matt Henderson, traveled from Davenport to Sioux City for the free services.

?I came all this way because I haven?t had dental insurance for five years,? he said. ?My? teeth are a mess.?

Organizers are going to transform the Great Hall into a giant dental practice. There will be about 100 dental chairs available during the free October clinic. They hope to treat nearly 2,000 patients.

Participating dentists say that the timing couldn?t be better for the event. Many patients are thinking about access to health care in this economy.

Amazon-owned Lovefilm, which competes with Netflix in the UK, has signed a multi-year content deal with Twentieth Century Fox, giving Lovefilm's UK members streaming access to recent and forthcoming movies and TV series in the so-called 'second pay window'. The move comes as the connected TV business is heating up in the UK, with Google TV finally making its way here too. The film deal will start with titles theatrically released in the UK in 2011, which will be made available to Lovefilm subscribers around March 2013. Sea rise faster on East Coast than rest of globe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches. But in Norfolk, Va., where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches, the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches, and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet. The accelerated rate along the East Coast could add about 8 inches to 11 inches more, Sallenger said.

"Where that kind of thing becomes important is during a storm," Sallenger said. That's when it can damage buildings and erode coastlines.

On the West Coast, a National Research Council report released Friday projects an average 3-foot rise in sea level in California by the year 2100, and 2 feet in Oregon and Washington. The land mass north of the San Andreas Fault is expected to rise, offsetting the rising sea level in those two states.

The USGS study suggests the Northeast would get hit harder because of ocean currents. When the Gulf Stream and its northern extension slow down, the slope of the seas changes to balance against the slowing current. That slope then pushes up sea levels in the Northeast. It is like a see-saw effect, Sallenger theorizes.

Scientists believe that with global warming, the Gulf Stream and other ocean currents are slowing and will slow further, Sallenger said.

Jeff Williams, a retired USGS expert who wasn't part of the study, and Stefan Rahmstorf, a professor of ocean physics at the Potsdam Institute in Germany, said the study does a good job of making the case for sea level rise acceleration.

Margaret Davidson, director of the Coastal Services Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Charleston, S.C., said the implications of the new research are "huge when you think about it. Somewhere between Maryland and Massachusetts, you've got some bodaciously expensive property at risk."

Sea level projections matter in coastal states because flood maps based on those predictions can result in restrictions on property development and affect flood insurance rates.

Those estimates became an issue in North Carolina recently when the Legislature proposed using historic figures to calculate future sea levels, rejecting higher rates from a state panel of experts. The USGS study suggests an even higher level than the panel's estimate for 2100.

The North Carolina proposal used data from University of Florida professor Robert Dean, who had found no regional differences in sea level rise. Dean said he can't argue with the results from Sallenger's study showing accelerating sea level rise in the region, but he said it's more likely to be from natural cycles. Sallenger said there is no evidence to support that claim.

BP shuts down Gulf of Mexico production

HOUSTON: BP Plc said on Saturday the company was shutting down Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production and stepping up worker evacuations as Tropical Storm Debby churned in the basin.

BP, the largest oil producer in the Gulf, said instructions had been given "to secure wells currently being drilled and to shut-in oil and gas production at BP-operated platforms until this work can be safely resumed."

The company had begun evacuating workers not essential to production earlier on Saturday. BP said more evacuations wold continue as long as weather permits.
