Fresh-faced London gears up for Fashion week (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Fashion blogger Sasha Wilkins thinks that there has never been a better time for the eyes of her industry to turn their attention towards London.

Wilkins, who is the founder of the successful LibertyLondonGirl.com fashion blog and has covered London Fashion Week for more than 20 seasons, said she has never been more excited than she is for this Friday's kickoff of the autumn/winter 2012 season.

"We seem to have got to the point where London can properly take its place on the world stage," said Wilkins, who is also a former Wall Street Journal executive style editor. "We fully compete against Paris, New York and Milan now from every point of view."

The British capital is best known for its daring and bold designers and for promoting fresh young talent like Mary Katrantzou and Jonathan Saunders alongside established designers such as Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood. But it has also suffered from a squeeze in the scheduling between the other fashion capitals.

London Fashion Week is big business for the industry and the UK economy, with an estimated 100 million pounds of orders placed during the event for each season, something designers who showcase their collections here understand well.

"Designers understand the business side of it, which is incredibly important and we have the most extraordinary creative talent," Wilkins said.

Judd Crane, director of Womenswear at luxury department store Selfridges, said he expects to see less established designers such as Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto create pieces that are not only inspiring and directional but also commercially successful.

"2012 is set to be a seminal year for British fashion," he said. "With the eyes of the world on London, it's an incredibly important opportunity for our design talent to show what great things they are capable of."

Crane said emerging designers to watch for in a cradle of creativity which has spawned Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and others are: J.W. Anderson, Erdem, Osman, Roksanda Ilincic and Sophie Hulme.

Wilkins, said she was really excited about young designers Fyodor Golan, who won the Fashion Fringe prize last year.

"They make the most beautiful, incredibly intricate and well thought out pieces. They are incredibly well realized."

London Fashion Week will take over the baton from New York, where a sumptuous display of rich brocades, lace and velvet inspired by Hollywood period film "The Artist" and British TV drama "Downton Abbey" were on show.

The event runs from February 17 until February 22 with both British and international designers showing their autumn/winter 2012 womenswear to an expected audience of 5,000 buyers, celebrities, industry insiders and journalists.

This year is expected to be the most digitally innovative yet, incorporating social media and live streaming at 44 of 59 catwalk shows online.

British Fashion Council Chairman Harold Tillman also hopes to increase the focus on Chinese customers, who are among the top spenders at London Fashion Week by providing incentives to make the event more lucrative to foreign buyers who account for 74 million pounds of the estimated 100 million pounds worth of orders placed during London Fashion Week.

"We're not giving them enough in this country," Tillman told Britain's Independent newspaper this week. "It's only a matter of changing the (visa) system and getting the government to understand we're losing billions."

The direct value of the UK fashion industry to the British economy is 21 billion pounds.

The event will add new elements alongside womenswear, including a new fine jewelry initiative where 10 selected jewelers will display their autumn/winter 2012 collections. Five headwear designers will also showcase their designs as part of this season's exhibition.

Friday's shows kick off with Preen, PPQ and the Central St Martins MA show, where many of the top British designers like McQueen and McCartney showcased their first designs before becoming international fashion stars.

Monday will mark the first time McQueen's diffusion line McQ will showcase in London, with Sarah Burton - the designer of the wedding dress worn by Kate Middleton for her marriage to Britain's Prince William last April -- at the helm. Buyers and journalists are also eyeing McCartney's special presentation on Saturday with eager interest.

Other favorites include Mulberry, Westwood and Matthew Williamson who are expected, as always, to put on a good show with the usual panache and flair that defines London.

WELLFLEET, Mass (AP) ? There's no good spot on Cape Cod for dolphins to continue this winter's massive and unexplained beachings, but a group of 11 has chosen one of the worst.

The remote inlet down Wellfleet's Herring River is a place where the tides recede fast and far, and that's left the animals mired in a grayish-brown mud one local calls "Wellfleet mayonnaise."

Walking is the only way to reach the animals, but it's not easy. Rescuers crunch through cord grass and seashells before hitting a grabby muck that releases a footstep only after a sucking pop. One volunteer hits a thigh-deep "hole" and tumbles forward. The mud covers his face like messy war paint the rest of the morning.

Rescuers make a quick assessment once they reach the animals.

One dolphin is dead, but the other 10 appear healthy, and some bang their tails in the shallows, struggling to move. Rescuers decide the best course is to wait for the incoming tide to free the dolphins, then boats can try to herd them out of trouble. The only other alternative is hauling them to a waiting trailer, and open water. But the trailer is nearly a mile away.

Waiting has risks. Dolphins can't survive long on land and there's no guarantee the boats can push the dolphins on to safety.

"Now's where we start crossing our fingers," said Brian Sharpe of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, as he heads for a boat.

A year ago, Wednesday's 11 stranded dolphins would have seemed remarkable. Now, they just add to a growing tally.

In the last month, 177 short-beaked common dolphins have stranded on Cape Cod, and 124 have died. The total is nearly five times the average of 37 common dolphins that have stranded annually during the last 12 years.

So far, there's no explanation.

Workers at the IFAW, which has led the rescue efforts, tag and take blood samples of the stranded animals, necropsies have been done on dead dolphins and a Congressional briefing was held early this month in the push for answers. But researchers can offer only theories about things such as changes in weather, water temperature or behavior of the dolphins' prey.

Geography may also play a role, if the dolphins are getting lost along the Cape's jagged inner coastline, in towns like Wellfleet.

In mid-February, Wellfleet feels like a place long emptied out after a dimly-remembered party. A closed mini-golf course, candy store and drive-in theater are among the dormant summer businesses seen on a drive into town. A downtown road rolls past shuttered cottages and motel cabins.

But Wellfleet is a hot spot for the dolphin strandings, in part because of features such as Jeremy Point, a thin peninsula that blocks the way to Cape Cod Bay if the dolphins wander too far into the town's harbor. The IFAW boat is charged with pushing the animals past the point Wednesday, once they're freed.

Meanwhile, rescuers in orange vests and black waders work in pairs to move the dolphins on slings, bringing them closer together and pointed the right way.

"We'll take advantage of the fact that they're social animals," said Kerry Branon, an IFAW spokeswoman. "We're hoping if we release them together, they'll stick together and then we'll herd them out around the point."

Not all the dolphins are on board, though. One drifts off to the left, where he could beach again. The manager of the stranding team, Katie Moore, slides over, grabs its dorsal fin, and gives it a push in the right direction.

"You're going the wrong way, buddy," she says.

The inlet continues to fill and the dolphins break into waters that are deeper than the rescuers can follow, but they're in two groups. The IFAW's boat eventually follows one pod and the Wellfleet harbormaster takes another. The noise from the motors pushes the dolphins ahead. So do acoustic pingers, devices that make a sound that annoys the dolphins.

From here, all the shore workers can do is await word from the boats, which will follow the dolphins until dark, if needed. The crew trudges off the beach and gathers later in a parking lot at the Wellfleet marina, where coffee and two boxes of doughnut holes will be served.

Volunteer Mike Giblin, muck still on his face, sits in his truck and explains why, at 64, he can't wait to get an early-morning call to help the dolphins. The animals are special, says the retired high school teacher. He adds that the dolphins somehow know the workers are there to help. He's certain.

Moore later smiles at the thought, but dismisses any mystical link with the animals.

"They're wild animals," she says. "This is not comforting for them. They don't want to be touched."

The day's gray cold has soaked through Moore and she's worn out. Help for her team is coming from different places; some workers from a Virginia aquarium assisted Wednesday. But she says the pace of the strandings has been exhausting.

"We just don't know when it's going to end anymore," she said. "That wears on people."

She's been encouraged by IFAW's success so far in getting dolphins back to sea. She also believes in the work.

"I think that as humans we have such a huge impact on the ocean environment and on these animals in other ways, that this is our opportunity to do the right thing."

As Moore speaks, her eyes flicker out to the harbor, where she can see the harbormaster's boat has led its group of dolphins to sea. But her agency's boat is still out, and she wonders if those dolphins will make it, or simply beach again. She wonders if she'll soon be second-guessing her decision to let the tide try to free the dolphins, rather than her workers.

But it's too soon for answers.

"Ask me tomorrow how I feel about that decision," she said.

B-Meg Llamados vs Barako Bull Energy

MANILA, Philippines ? The B-Meg locals carried the cudgels for the team with import Denzel Bowles saddled by early fouls as the Llamados nipped the Barako Bull Energy, 88-86, for their second straight win in the PBA Commissioner?s Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome tonight.

Joe Devance, James Yap and Marc Pingris delivered as the Llamados overcame an 11-point halftime deficit and scored a follow-up on their triumphant debut versus the Meralco Bolts last Friday.

Devance led all scorers with 26 points, Yap added 14 and Pingris contributed nine, all in the second half, including two jams that helped fuel B-Meg?s third-quarter surge.

Pingris also grabbed five rebounds, two off the offensive board making him the 42nd PBA player to collect a career total of 1,000 offensive caroms.

Defensively, the Llamados focused on Dermarr Johnson, limiting him to two in the second half after exploding for 19 in the first 24 minutes of play.

The whole Barako team was held to a single field-goal basket in the last four minutes as it suffered the loss following a winning debut versus Alaska also last Friday.

Willie Miller had a chance to send the game into overtime but missed a shot after faking off three defenders in the dying seconds.

?We played bad in the first half. We?re playing hard but we?re not playing smart. But I have to give it to the guys, they hung in there,? said B-Meg coach Tim Cone.

?It?s a big win. The tournament is a sprint and you have to get as many wins as you can. Our next opponents are Petron and Talk n Text. Imagine the pressure if we split our first two games,? Cone also said.

Bowles wasn?t much of help last night as he picked up three fouls right in the first quarter, a fourth just two minutes into the second period and his fifth with 3:42 left in the third quarter.

?That?s something Denzel has to learn. There are fouls that you don?t have to give up. He has to stay on the floor,? said Cone.

The Energy pounced on the Llamados with Bowles on the bench in the second quarter, working on a 15-5 run to open a 12-point spread at 48-36.

But behind Devance, Pingris and Yap, the Llamados got back into the game in the third and hung tough till the end.

Devance and Bowles scored three unanswered baskets as the Llamados moved ahead to stay at 87-83 with 2:01 left to play.

Bowles was limited to 29 minutes, churning out 19 points and 13 rebounds. Johnson, on the other hand, logged 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists and the same number of steals and blocks.

Egypt state press escalates dispute over U.S. NGOs (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian state-run newspapers escalated a dispute with the United States over an inquiry into civil society groups on Tuesday by splashing across their front pages accusations of an American plan to spread "anarchy" in the Arab country.

Based on remarks by a government minister, the headlines marked another low in a crisis between Washington and Cairo triggered by the investigation into U.S.-based non-governmental organizations that has resulted in criminal charges against Americans who have been banned from leaving the country.

"America is behind the anarchy," declared the front page of Al Gomhuria newspaper. "American funding aims to spread anarchy in Egypt," read the front page of Al Ahram newspaper. The papers are two of Egypt's most widely-distributed dailies.

The headlines were based on comments made in October to the investigating judges by Minister of International Cooperation Faiza Abul Naga - but which only came to light on Monday when they were released to the state news agency MENA.

In her remarks, Abul Naga linked what she said was a surge in U.S. funding for civil society groups last year to an attempt to steer the course of the post-Hosni Mubarak transition in "a direction that realized American and Israeli interests".

"All the indications show that there was a clear desire to abort any chance for Egypt to emerge as a modern democratic state with a strong economy," she was quoted as saying, adding that such a prospect would be a threat to "American and Israeli interests".

The timing of the statement's release is as telling as their contents, analysts said, coming just days after Egypt's military ruler appeared to signal an effort to contain tensions that now threaten $1.3 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Cairo.

"It looks like an escalation, but I don't know if it is intended or it reflects a state of confusion in the conduct of domestic and foreign policies in Egypt," said Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, a political analyst.

WORST ROW WITH U.S. IN DECADES

Egypt insists the NGO case is a judicial matter and that all NGOs, regardless of origin, must heed Egyptian law.

Accusations against the activists include working for organizations not properly registered in Egypt and receiving foreign funds illegally.

The NGOs involved say they sought to register with the authorities but that their requests were not followed up. Many point out that they have operated openly in Egypt for years.

The tiff is one of the worst in more than 30 years of close U.S.-Egyptian ties and has complicated Washington's efforts to establish relations with the military council that took power from Mubarak after his overthrow in a popular revolt a year ago.

U.S. officials have called for the travel ban to be lifted, and the U.S. Congress has warned that the dispute could endanger aid to Egypt.

While the White House announced plans on Monday to keep aid to Egypt at the level of recent years, a State Department spokeswoman said that "if we cannot resolve the current impasse it could have implications for this relationship and for our ability to disburse this money".

Nineteen U.S. citizens are among 43 foreign and local activists barred from leaving Egypt because of the investigation. An undisclosed number of U.S. citizens have sought shelter in the U.S. embassy.

In her remarks to the investigators, Abul Naga explained her doubts about the work of organizations involved, including the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute, both loosely linked to the two main U.S. political parties.

She said U.S. funding to civil society groups in Egypt had shot up following the uprising against Mubarak. Funds had been funneled outside the legal channels and diverted from development projects agreed with the government, she said.

"Neither of the two states has the right to violate these agreements," said Abul Naga.
